THE RICH AND THE POOR!

Reality hurts our eyes
But at least it helps us
see clearer when we are
blurred by the sight of
beautiful fantasies.

“There are things
that we don’t want to happen
but have to accept.Things we don’t want to know
but have to learn, And people we can’t live without
but have to let go.”

The calm before the storm…

I checked out my Dolce & Gabanna outfit in the full-length mirror. After applying my Victoria’s Secret makeup, I headed out the door.

I got into my Porsche and sped off to school.

“Hi Nora!”Camelia greeted me as I got out of my car.

“Nice ride,” Jay commented. I nodded at him.

I hugged Camelia and we set off to class.

“Not that I mind, Jay but will you stop following me around?” I said, my tone icy.

He scurried off and Camelia grinned at me.

“So miss popular, what does it feel like to have everyone wrapped around your fingers?” she asks me.

I laugh, “I try not to use my powers for everything.”

We’re too busy giggling when I bump into Magnus.

“Hey Nora,” he greets.

“You know him?” Camelia asks, disgusted. I nod. I hurry into class, praying my best friend will just let things be.

The entire class she keeps on asking me about him. I keep shrugging, and I manage to get her off my back.

Class after class, Camelia kept looking at me weird. But I just kept shrugging and she decided to let it go. I didn’t understand why it was such a big deal anyway.

After class ended I went back home and was greeted by Magnus. He pulled me into a hug, but I didn’t hug him back.

“What’s wrong?” he asks.

“Nothing,” I say.

“Is something at university bothering you?” he asks.

I nod. “You can’t just do that! No one knows we’re together Magnus.”

“Oh,” he says furiously, “you’re so popular and too good for me huh?”

“It’s not that. You’re taking the wrong meaning out of this. You know my parents, they will freak out when they know about this. You know our society Magnus.” I explain.

“You’re rich, I’m poor. I get it. We can’t date huh?” he says bluntly.

“I don’t see you like that Magnus. You know that,” I say, putting my hand on his arm.

“Then why do you act like it?” he asks softly, “do you want to keep our relationship a secret forever?”

“No Magnus. Eventually I will tell everyone. I just need some time, alright? Right now everything depends on my parents. If I mess up they will punish me and send me far away from you and I don’t want that. I’ll tell them when I have nothing to lose, Magnus.” I explained to him.

“Okay,” he says smiling.

We went inside, did our homework together, played around, and flirted as if there was no problem in the world.

I wished it was always like this. That I didn’t have to hide such a big thing from my own family – my own flesh and blood.

As soon as my parents came I ran to my room, pretending as if I hadn’t just spent my afternoon with Magnus.

Shocking news

“Hey honey,” my mom said, entering my room, “good news, Magnus is leaving. So you might want to come and say goodbye to him. I know you hate him, but he’s leaving next morning and it’d be nice if you said goodbye at least.”

I muttered a whatever, and waited for her to close the bedroom door.

I let the information sink in. He was going back to town. Magnus came and lived with us for a year because his parents had to go somewhere and left their son with us because they were family friends. And now he’s going back.

In front of our parents, we acted like complete enemies and made them believe we hated each other. But in reality, I loved him.

This was just the difference between the rich and the poor. My parents always looked down upon all those people who weren’t as rich as we were. They were snobby and spoilt, exactly how the world thinks we are. They thought they were too good for everybody.

And the only reason they kept Magnus was because his family decided to pay them and literally begged them.

My parents warned me not to meddle with him, and now I was deeply in love with him.

I ran to Magnus’ room, watching as he packed up. I was about to say something when my mother appeared behind me and instead of telling him I was going to miss him I said, “Glad you’re leaving.”

“Same here. Can’t wait to get out,” he said, smirking.

“Okay children, enough fighting.” My mother said.

I smiled at him briefly and left the room.

My mother wasn’t like that. She liked Magnus, and she only considered the poor less fortunate. She was the one who convinced Dad to let him stay.

But my dad, I swear it was like he had a heart of stone.

I went back to my room, and did my homework, trying to forget that we would become strangers all over again.

The reality of the whole situation sunk in. We never thought about what would happen if he ever left. We were too busy enjoying the moment. Would we be able to carry out a long distance relationship? Was our love that strong?

I went downstairs, seeing my mom getting ready to leave.

“Where are you going?” I asked.

“Me and dad have to attend a dinner, honey. We’ll be home late. Go to bed alright?” she said.

I nodded, unable to keep my happiness inside. As soon as I heard the main door close, I ran to Magnus’ room.

“Hey,” I whispered. I saw him lost in thought, sadness etched across his face.

“Glad to see me leave?” he asked, smiling.

“No.” I said, willing myself not to cry.

We lay down, in each other’s arms, none of us daring to speak what’s on our mind. I made the move.

“So,” I said quietly, “is this the end?”

“I’m afraid it is.” He said, “back where I live, it’s not easy to keep a long distance relationship. And I love you, but this is not something I’m ready for right now.”

“I love you,” I said.

“I love you too, which is why I want to let you go. I don’t want you to hope for something that is practically impossible. Look at you, and look at me.” he said, gesturing to both of us.

“We may love each other,” he continued, “but we both know this won’t happen.”

“So was I just a past time for you?” I said, my voice breaking.

“Baby don’t you dare think that. We just never looked at the harsh reality. We were stuck in our fantasy world. We never looked at what would happen next,” he said.

I nodded. We spent those hours, knowing they were our last. I looked at the time, and told him I had to go.

It  never even crossed my mind that there would come a time when he would leave. I got so used to him always being around.

He hugged me, “Goodbye Nora. I might be going, but you’re always up here in my heart. I love you, always.”

“Bye Magnus. I love you too,” I said, returning the hug.

I left his room, and lay awake in bed, thinking. I wasn’t as sad as I expected myself to be. Deep down maybe I knew this was how things would turn out.

But I loved him, truly. He made my heart and soul happy. But I knew I had to let him go. I was only in high school, and there was my whole life ahead of me.

Everyone can find happiness after sadness

Hours turned into days, days into weeks, weeks into months and months into years. The ache subsided.

And for the first time in so long, I was happy with William.

He was a family friend’s son, his parents in the same occupation as mine.

William wasn’t like typical rich people, and I was instantly attracted to him. He considered both the rich and the poor equal.

I was slowly falling for him, without even knowing it.

**10 years later**

Breed positively in life

“Samantha come back here!” I hissed.

“But mommy I want those candy,” she pouted. And my determination almost melted. Almost.

“No candy. You’ve already got candy!” I said.

“Daughter giving you a hard time?” a masculine voice asked me.

I sighed. “Yes.”

“That makes too of us,” he said, chuckling. I turned around, unable to un-see what I just saw.

“I have to go,” I said hurriedly.

“Nora?” he asked, disbelief written all over his features.

“Magnus?” I asked.

He nodded. My husband came behind me and put his arm on my shoulder.

“Can we go home already now darling? What is with you ladies and shopping?” William asked.

“William, this is Magnus,” I said, introducing Magnus to William, “an old high school friend. And this is William, my husband.”

They both shook hands,

“Pleasure to meet you,” William said.

“Well I better get going to my wife,” Magnus said.

“You’re married?” I asked.

He nodded, “It’s been 3 years. Well hope to see you around.”

I nodded and he left.

I was surprised I didn’t feel any pangs of jealousy. I had found happiness with William after dating a million guys. I was genuinely happy, with William.

And I was genuinely happy for Magnus.
