Love is when two people touch each other’s soul

Its honesty and trust

It’s helping one another

Its mutual respect

Love means that differences can be worked out

It is reaching your dreams together

Love is the connection of two hearts

Yours and mine

“We’re done. We’re over Katy,” I said into the phone.

“James? Is this some sort of joke?” she asked softly.

“No its not! What part of ‘we are done’ do you not understand?” I asked, my voice rising.

I ended the call and fell on the couch, sighing.

“What’s up mate? Fought with Katy?” Ben asked me from the kitchen.

“We’re done,” I told him.

Ben came into the living room, looking shocked.

“But you guys have been together since two years. I thought you were going to ask her out anytime soon!” he said.

I sighed. What is wrong with people? Why do they have to tell me about my relationships? I’m well aware of them.

“I know it’s been two years. I dated Katy not you.” I said.

“I know, but what went wrong? You told me you loved her.” He said.

“I do,” I agreed.

He furrowed his brows, “then what’s the problem?”

Right then the doorbell rang, and it was Katy.

“Hi James,” she greeted, “can we talk?”

“There’s nothing to talk about hon. We’re done. Over.” I told her.

“Why?” she asked softly, “because I asked you to marry me?”

“Yes,” I told her, “I don’t want that kind of thing.”

“Then don’t marry me,” she pleaded, “but please don’t leave me like this.”

“I’m sorry Katy. What we had is finished,” I told her.

“James. James I love you. I want you to remember that,” she whispered, wiped the tears from her eyes and left, banging the door loudly.

“I see things didn’t go well,” Ben muttered.

I shot him a glare. He just shrugged and handed me a sandwich.

I took it and we both sat in silence.

“So,” he asked, “do you want to talk about it?”

“No,” I snapped.

He got up and went back to his room, and I went back to mine.

I got a message from Sasha, the new girl, who asked if I’d like to join her for a drink.

I typed in a quick yes and decided to take a shower.

I started to have second thoughts about Katy. I mean, I missed her slender fingers, and how they perfectly interlaced with mine.

I scolded myself for thinking about her.

I got out of the shower and Sasha had sent me another text asking if we could meet right now.

It was the perfect thing to distract me from Katy.

We met at a bar close by, and after a few drinks, we were all over each other.

Thoughts of Katy were long gone, and all I could think about was Sasha.

We parted our ways, drunk, and I fell asleep the second my body made contact with the bed.

I woke up to a terrible headache and saw a few aspirins on the side table. I called for Ben and he came running inside.

“Hey mate how are you feeling?” he asked, panting.

“I’m good,” I said, my voice hoarse.

He came over and handed me the aspirins and water. I gulped it down and lay back on the bed.

“Thanks Ben,” I muttered.

“No problem mate,” he said, winking.

I smiled and he left. I laid down for quite long until my phone started ringing.

It was from Sasha. I answered her and greeted her.

“I’m sorry about last night,” she said solemnly.

“Why are you sorry?” I asked, confused, “I had an amazing time!”

“I was drunk. And I needed someone to talk to. I’m sorry, I’m just not ready for a relationship.” She said.

“I wasn’t asking you out Sasha. I only wanted to hang out, as friends. Nothing more. Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression.” I explained, lying. Of course I wanted to date her! I hated being single and I feel lonely ever since Katy left.

“Okay,” she agreed.

“Great, so when can we meet up?” I asked.

She hesitated and then gave me the coordinates for a restaurant.

We said our goodbyes and I went downstairs.

“Hey mate how are you feeling?” Ben asked me the second he saw me.

“Pretty good,” I said, smirking, “Just landed a date with Sasha.”

He looked confused, “You’re done with Katy.”

“Yep, moved on. Fresh start,” I said, shrugging.

He just furrowed his brows and continued watching TV.

“Joseph and Andrew will be coming over anytime now. Gonna play cards. You in?” he asked.

I nodded, and so we spent the rest of the evening playing cards and laughing around. It was all good, but I felt lonely. I wanted to have someone, someone who was always there for me, emotionally and physically.

I got ready to go to the restaurant, and left.

My phone started ringing when I got in the car. It was from Sasha. Impatient girl.

Sasha was already standing there waiting for me when I got there.

“Sorry for being late,” I apologized.

She laughed, “No, I just came early.”

We went inside, and she had already reserved a nice table for us, facing the window. You could see the sea from here.

“Beautiful isn’t it?” she asked.

I nodded, mesmerized by the view and mesmerized by her beauty.

We talked, and we laughed. We finished eating but we kept sitting there, talking and laughing until the manager kicked us out.

“I had a really good time,” she said when we reached the car.

“Me too,” I told her.

We parted ways, and I wished I could take her home with me.

I got home and this time, I didn’t wait for her to call. I called her, but her line was busy.

Seconds later I got her call.

“Hey I was just calling you,” she said.

“Yea me too, your line was busy though.” I said.

I could hear her light laughter through the phone, and it made me smile.

“So if the manager didn’t kick us out-,” I started.

“We would’ve still been there right now,” she interrupted me.

“Yea.” I said.

“You’re really nice. But I thought you were in a relationship?” she asked, sounding confused.

“You think I’m cheating on her?” I asked.

“No, no, no,” she said quickly, “I was just wondering what this, hanging out means.”

“I’m done with her. Her name was Katy and we ended things a long time ago. This, means I like you, if that’s not obvious already,” I explained.

“I like you too,” she said.

We talked some more after that, wished each other good night, and I could sleep peacefully again.

The next few days passed by, and we went out every night. The only time I ever thought about Katy, was when I was in dreaming. Her long black hair tied up messily. Her fresh, fair skin glowing as always, and her eyes prominent.

Sasha was the opposite. She was a brunette. Short hair and nice eyes. She had tanned skin, and could easily pass off as a model.

We were having lunch, and she told me she loved me.

“That’s good,” I said.

“What the hell? You want to be in a relationship with me but you don’t love me?” she asked.

“I do, but I just am not ready for a big commitment,” I explained.

“That doesn’t mean you love me,” she told me.

“I do love you, I promise.” I said.

“Then that means you’d be willing to do anything and everything for me!” she hissed.

“Love isn’t about commitment.” I defended.

“You’re such a jerk. I think I understand why Katy broke up with you. You say you love me, but that’s all it is. You don’t really love me. You’re just here for a laugh, and that’s it.” She said angrily.

“Isn’t that what love is?” I asked.

“No it’s not!” she snapped. “You’re a jerk. You gave me hope that there could be something between us, but you left me right when I fell for you!”

She stormed off, leaving me calling her name like a madman.

This was sort of the same thing that happened between me and Hailey, and me and Katy. What is wrong with these girls?

I went back home and called Ben. He was still at work. I sacrificed my lunch break from work for this woman and she just storms off?

Why does every girl have to want so much? Can’t they handle a nice relationship? Everything was fine with Katy until she wanted too much from me. We hung out, and it was fun. But the second women want more, that’s when things start to get out of hand.

When Ben got home, I told him everything.

“Well mate,” he said, “when you tell a girl you love her you can’t expect her to not want more from you. Love is such a big word, it covers everything.”

“You sound like a girl Ben, grow some balls.” I said.

“No mate, you grow some balls and accept the truth. Katy was an amazing woman, the reason why you two broke up is because you misunderstood the concept of love. If you don’t love her, then don’t tell her that!” he explained.

“But I do love her,” I defended.

“well you sure don’t act like it then do you?” he asked.

“Well why don’t you date Katy then?” I said, pissed.

“You know that’s not what I meant mate. Just think about it. Hailey, Kate and now Sasha. They all lasted for 2 or 3 years. They expect some sort of commitment from you! You can’t keep doing this, you’re going to run out of woman you know. If you want fun from the beginning then make it clear, don’t opt for telling them you love them.” He explained.

“But I do love her. I love her, I want her to be here with me,” I told him, devastated.

“Mate you need to open the dictionary and see what love means.” Ben told me, “Love is about everything. You have to give up everything. Every little thing. Commit to them. Love is commitment itself, devotion. It’s a promise, to be by each other. Not just through the good times but all the bad ones too.”

I nodded, “That’s so much.”

He nodded, “that’s why you shouldn’t go trashing around the word love like it’s a joke.”

I called up Sasha that night, and told her about Katy and Hailey.

“James,” she said softly, “I get it. But I can’t play around and fool around.”

“No Sasha,” I pleaded, “I don’t want to fool around. I want to make this real. I love you and I want to do what you’re supposed to do when you’re in love. I want to try this out. Please let me make this right. Just give me a chance. This whole love thing is new to me, but if we do this together we can work this out. Please, do this, for me, for us.”

“Sure thing James,” she agreed, “Sure thing.”

And so we did. It was hard, to sacrifice everything, but it was worth it. And I understood, what love truly meant.

what love truly means

It’s about accepting everything, the good with the bad. Sticking with each other, through thick and thin. It makes you happy, and at times it makes you sad. But it’s a feeling so huge, so big, that any amount of words cannot completely describe it.

But it’s worth it, because it’s the best feeling in the entire world.
